Kashrut Guidelines

All Minyan meals are kosher dairy/pareve. Prepared foods (anything that is not packaged, including salads) may be brought only from a kosher kitchen.

If you do not have a kosher kitchen, please bring kosher-certified food such as whole fruit and vegetables, juice, wine, challah, or Entenmann's cake. If you are interested in making your kitchen kosher, the Minyan will be happy to help. Please contact the steerers for more information.

What foods don't need a hekhsher?
All ingredients used to prepare Minyan food must be certified kosher with a hekhsher except: plain rice, dried beans, frozen unsweetened orange juice, fresh pure juices (except those containing grapes), soda (except grape), lemon juice, corn meal, baking powder, baking soda, pure spices, flour, sugar, fresh fruits and vegetables, canned fruits and vegetables if they are canned only in their own juice, and frozen fruits and vegetables.

Cheese must be hekhshered or rennetless.  Rennetless cheeses must be either factory packaged or cut in a store that does not sell meat.

If there is any question about an item, please contact the steerers.

What foods need to be labelled?
Dishes prepared from rennetless cheeses should be labeled as such. This includes grated parmesan cheese.

Any dishes containing fish, nuts, or alcohol MUST be labeled as such in consideration of those who cannot or will not eat such foods.

About Pot Luck Meals

Please indicate what you'll be bringing on the e-vite.

How much should I bring?
Each adult in a couple or family is expected to contribute food. That is, a couple is expected to offer double the amount of a single person. Feel free to invite guests to Minyan meals, but remember it is your responsibility to contribute food for them.

Each Minyan member should bring enough food to serve about 6-8 people. We often have newcomers or guests, whom we invite to meals, who did not know about bringing food.

Dropping off food for Minyan events
Please deliver your food directly to the coordinator on Thursday evening unless you have made other arrangements with him or her. Remember that Thursday is a school night so please don't drop things off too late in the evening.

If you live within the eruv AND will be walking, you may bring food to Minyan events on Shabbat (if it was cooked/purchased before Shabbat). Just don't expect it to be heated up.

Important note about food allergies

Note: There are minyan members with severe nut allergies. Please do not bring items containing nuts to Minyan events.

Contact the steerers if you have any questions.
